They say experience is the best teacher; but sometimes, experiences can also be shared through the wisdom of somebody who has already been there.

By taking on the rewarding role of becoming a mentor, you are helping unlock a young individual’s potential for a better future.

Did you know: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as suffrage, on Aug. 18, 1920. 

This means 2020 is the 100^th anniversary of this milestone; in part dedicated to a celebration of suffrage, the 4^th annual Reno Women’s March happened Saturday, Jan. 18. 

As the weather becomes colder, our need for warmth grows even stronger. But warmth doesn't only apply to the temperature of our surroundings—it's also about what can comfort our hearts and souls.

At Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, we're dedicated to uplifting the community's bodies, hearts, and souls. To do this, we help people of all cultures and beliefs overcome poverty and become self-sufficient through a variety of services and programs in the Reno/Sparks community and across rural Nevada. On average, we serve more than 20,000 individuals each month.

In October of 2017, Kirk Allaire had a crazy-big idea. 

The roots of this idea: As the successful owner of a company called Gratis Payment Processing, he wanted to give back to a non-profit that held great meaning to him personally. In the early days of his company, he contacted this specific charity to try to initiate the process. But he found the simple idea of trying to donate to a national organization to be overwhelming for the company’s bandwidth at the time. 

On April 11, the Community Foundation of Western Nevada launched its Campaign For Our Community at a high-energy rocket launch themed party, highlighted by three unique perspectives on the value of giving.

A Fund For Good. Forever.

Jennifer Satre, Campaign Co-Chair, introduced launch party guests to the Campaign for Our Community's effort to build a Community Endowment that will yield $400,000 to millions of dollars in grants each year – grants that will be used to address wide-spread challenges in our community.

Reno is actively participating in product philanthropy thanks to the work of the Good Supply Co. By getting retail goods that would otherwise go to waste into the hands of those in need, Good Supply Co. is helping local non-profits serve their communities while protecting the environment.

Have you heard of product philanthropy?

A typical birthday for most people involves a couple of presents, a few texts from friends, and perhaps culminates in a dessert topped by a lit candle brought into a dim room by a handful of singers. 

But Barbie Marcoe, whose birthday happens to be the same day as this interview, isn’t most people. 

“We’re expecting 60 high schoolers to be here today, starting in just a few minutes,” she calls out across the room as a volunteer walks through the door on this gray Friday morning. “And I have the perfect job for you!”
