In our digital age, it can be difficult to remember to slow down and write handwritten notes or letters, let alone mail them. Do people even still have stamps lying around anymore?

While texting and emailing is easier, neither has quite the same effect. And because they happen so rarely, they’re even more valuable. There’s also the benefit of being edit-free, as being unable to edit does tend to reflect the more genuine and authentic you.

Here are just a few reasons to consider investing in cards, a pen and stamps.

The ‘Why’ of Handwritten Notes

Did you know: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as suffrage, on Aug. 18, 1920. 

This means 2020 is the 100^th anniversary of this milestone; in part dedicated to a celebration of suffrage, the 4^th annual Reno Women’s March happened Saturday, Jan. 18. 

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Reno Events Center will transform into a hub where dozens of local service providers can help people who are facing homelessness, or who are homeless, find medical care, social services, housing aid, quality of life care and much more.

Held annually, Project Homeless and Family Connect brings those experiencing or facing homelessness together with free services. This effective, organized effort to coordinate services is part of a nationwide best practice and is held in more than 200 communities around the world each year.

As an energy engineer, and Bhakti yoga teacher, Priya Dey-Sarkar’s life may at first glance seem at odds with itself. But she only sees how connected it all is. “No matter what I do, I work with energy — helping it flow from point A to point B,” Dey-Sarkar explains.

There may be no other time of the year when folks feel so naturally drawn to donating gifts, money, and time. But what often happens is that the burst of charitable feelings that come in November and December often dissipate come January and February.

But as I shared in a previous post, community service not only provides rewards to those receiving your help, but the rewards that come from contributing something good into an often-difficult and even frightening world are enormous.

A couple years ago, when my daughter turned 8, my husband and I held a birthday party for her in the backyard. We had invited about 15 or so kids, assuming about two-thirds of them would actually show up. Imagine our surprise when not only did every single invited guest arrive, but some brought siblings. And every one of them arrived with a present.

Though the holidays should be focused on love, faith, family and togetherness, they can be quite stressful when we feel compelled to find perfect gifts for every person on a long list.

With holiday retail advertisements blasting from every corner and shopping in full swing, we thought it was a good time to look at the creative and positive ways people in our community show their appreciation for loved ones during the holidays.

At Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, we experience the grace in generosity every day as we provide support to those in need in the Reno/Sparks community as well as across rural Nevada. On average, more than 20,000 individuals receive support from Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada every month.
