Today we're catching up with longtime contributor Marie Baxter, who frequently shares stories with Just the Positive about the incredible community service performed every day at Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada.
1. Tell us: What’s your day job, and what’s your favorite part of doing what you do?
My “day job” is serving as the Chief Executive Officer for Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. My favorite part of what I do is working with the members of my incredible staff, across all of our programs and services. Their passion and dedication to helping the most vulnerable members of our community is so inspiring. They have been so flexible and adaptable and have never lost sight of putting our clients first.
2. Why do you choose to contribute to JTP?
Truly, every day at Catholic Charities, our clients tell us how their lives have improved because of the support they receive from our agency. It may sound cliché, but Catholic Charities really is a lifeline for thousands of people who need help across the state. Now more than ever, we are seeing people who never thought they’d need help turning to us. By sharing our successes through JTP, we hope to invite in new partners and collaborators who share our commitment to changing lives.
3. What is your secret to maintaining a positive outlook during these chaotic times?
I am so thankful that we live in a time when we can stay connected virtually. I know everyone is burned out on virtual meetings, but I am thankful every day that I can see and talk to my staff while keeping everyone safe. Is it as great as being in person? Of course not, but I can’t imagine how isolated everyone would feel if this pandemic had happened before MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime and the other platforms that have become part of our new professional and social reality.
4. What is your favorite thing to do during Northern Nevada's colder months?
I was born and raised in Sparks and there are so many great things to do in our community. I desperately miss our unique special events, which are the highlight of all of our seasons, and can’t wait for their return. This fall, the best thing we did was the Purple Pumpkin Pursuit. I hope it becomes an annual tradition — so creative.
Editor's note: Thank you, Marie, for your stories — and for your commitment to the betterment of our community!
